Now, let’s return to today’s topic: What does September have to offer here in the North?
When one thinks of surfing, warm beaches with gentle rolling waves often come to mind. However, in the North, under the right conditions, there are several places worth visiting for the surf enthusiast looking to explore something new.
What makes surfing in the North so unique?
Surfing in the North is a completely different experience than in more tropical parts of the world. Here, waves are generated by the power of the wind rather than by large storms on open oceans like the Atlantic, Pacific, or Indian Oceans. In the North, it’s about being mindful of wind strength and predicting when the perfect waves will break on the shore.
What should you consider before heading
out into the water?
Before venturing into our cold northern waters, it’s important to be prepared and adjust your gear to the prevailing conditions.
The most crucial preparation before surfing is the choice of wetsuit. Although we surfers primarily stay on the water's surface, it is essential to keep ourselves warm.
A well-chosen wetsuit not only provides extra protection against the elements but also important insulation against the cold, allowing you to enjoy your surfing experience longer and more comfortably. Investing time in finding the right suit can truly enhance your performance and safety in the water.
Here’s a guide for wetsuit selection:
- Temperature 12-17 degrees: Use a 4/3 mm wetsuit and shoes.
- Temperature 9-13 degrees: Choose a 5/3 or 5/4 mm wetsuit, shoes, and a hood.
- Temperature below 9 degrees: A 6/4 mm wetsuit, shoes, and a hood are recommended.
To ensure the best grip on your board, it is important to choose a wax that is specifically designed for cold water. The wax is formulated to provide optimal traction and comfort, allowing you to focus on your surfing without worrying about slippery feet.
If you are unsure which type of wax suits you best and the right temperature, we recommend joining the WAHINES Surf Community.
Here, you will also have the opportunity to interact with other surf enthusiasts, share experiences, and receive valuable recommendations. In the community, you can participate in discussions about various surf equipment, get advice on the latest trends, and even join workshops and surf hangouts.
Whether you are new to surfing or have been riding the waves for many years, you will find inspiration and support from like-minded individuals.
It’s also crucial to surf with the awareness that the weather can change rapidly. Always pay attention to how the waves shift and bring something warm to drink along with weather-appropriate clothing. Energy is important, so don’t forget to pack an energy-rich snack to regain strength after surfing. If possible, change in a sheltered area to avoid getting cold. And remember: never surf in remote locations unless you are an experienced surfer.
September is a fantastic month to explore surfing in the North, and we look forward to sharing this adventure with you.

Five of the Most Exciting Surf Spots in the Nordics
# 1: SKANE OCH HALLAND, SWEDEN
Along Sweden's southern coast, we find Skane's renowned surf areas, with Osterlen and northwestern Skane leading the way. Here, it is nearly possible to find surf-friendly waves throughout September. With the warmth of late summer and pleasantly warmed waters, it invites surfers to enjoy delightful days on the waves.
Surfing continues northward to Halland's open waters, where Varberg stands out as Sweden's number one surf mecca. Here, a variety of water sports can be practiced, including kite, foil, wind, and wave surfing. Varberg's beach life is vibrant, making it an ideal location for both beginners and more experienced surfers.

# 2: COLD HAWAII, DENMARK
In North Jutland, where golden sand dunes meet the Atlantic, lies Cold Hawaii – one of the Nordics' most famous surf destinations. This fantastic area boasts up to 31 surf spots, with Klitmøller at the forefront, which is also an international venue for surf competitions.
In Klitmøller, you'll find a delightful mix of local restaurants, surf schools, and unique surf shops that create a lively atmosphere for all surfers. Beyond Klitmøller, Løkken and Hirtshals also offer excellent surfing opportunities, making Cold Hawaii a dream destination for water sports enthusiasts.
# 3: TORO, SWEDEN
Torö, located just over an hour from Stockholm in Nynäshamn municipality, is a picturesque nature reserve that attracts wave, wind, and kite surfers. With its two beaches, Stenstranden and Kärringsviken, Torö is one of Sweden's most well-known surf spots, where even national championships are held.
Kärringsviken offers a shallow beach that is perfect for beginners, while Stenstranden challenges more experienced surfers with its rocky bottom. If the wind blows more than 9 m/s, it’s wise to arrive early, as the beach quickly fills up with other enthusiasts.
Torö is also a place for relaxation, ideal for picnics with friends or family, and offers opportunities for kayaking and SUP. Be mindful of parking and carpooling to respect nature. Buses run from Nynäshamn, but be prepared for a bit of a walk to the beach.
# 4: PEARLS OF THE BALTIC SEA, SWEDEN
The coast along the Baltic Sea, from north to south including Gotland, is filled with local surf spots. On Gotland, Högklint, Ekeviken, and Sandviken are popular places where waves roll in on windy days. In the north, you can discover the famous beaches of Salusand and Smitingen. Norway´s surf locations stretch from north to southwest and are known for their stunning nature and varied surfing opportunities. Two of Norway's most famous surf destinations

# 5: FINLAND'S NEWLY DISCOVERED COAST
Finland has a relatively new surf culture that began to take shape in 1997, and several charming surf spots have emerged along the coast. Here, you can enjoy cold water surfing, lake surfing, and even indoor activities. Most surf spots are located along Finland's western and southern coasts.
The most famous surf spot is Yyteri Bay, located by the Baltic Sea. This spot offers a beach break and favorable conditions with offshore winds from the east, providing ideal waves coming from the west. It’s rarely crowded, and you can easily find a place in the lineup.
If you want to discover surfable waves in lakes, you can visit Finland's largest lakes, such as Saimaa, Päijänne, or Näsijärvi. For those seeking a unique experience, there's the popular surf pool Artwave, where artificial waves have been created to promote the Finnish surf culture.
