Surfboards can vary in appearance depending on the waves you surf, your level of surfing, budget and whether you surf for competition or leisure. Join us for surf facts and explore everything from history about to the different types of surfboards today.

What materials are used in surfboards?

When buying a surfboard, it is important to consider which material it is made of, as it affects surf behavior, weight and durability. The most common materials are polyurethane (PU) and epoxy. Where expoy is the most durable to damages and scratches (so called dings in surfsnack) and maybe that is a good alternative to beginners.

It's more common to see now that surf shapers are increasingly opting for a return to the traditional and environmentally friendly alternative of using wood. In fact, wooden boards have been used for surfing since as early as 700 AD by Hawaiian royalty. These boards, made of koa and balsas, were longer and heavier compared to the options available today.

Key Considerations for Your Surfboard Selection

In order to make an informed and sustainable purchase decision when buying a surfboard, it is essential to consider various factors beyond just the material. Having a basic understanding of these factors is crucial to ensure that you choose the right surfboard for your needs.

#1: LENGTH

The length is measured in foot (ft), where a foot is approximately 30.48 cm. The longer the board, the more stability. For beginners, a longer board is beneficial.

#2: THICKNESS

Keep in mind that the thicker the board, the more fluid power. It makes it easier to paddle and gives better slide in the water. On the other hand, a thinner board is easier to control and get through the waves with.

#3: WIDTH

Stability is once again a decisive factor for the surfboard. The wider the nose, the more stable.

The narrower the easily maneuver and fast the board becomes in the water. Also, be sure to choose the right width based on your surfing experience as well as to get the paddle tags as effective as possible.

#4: VOLYM

Here all three elements are included above - length, thickness and width. Consider this as the most important factor when buying a surfboard. Remember that the more volume, the better for beginners.
