Why are you attached to the surfboard?
Historically, there was never a leash attached to the board. It was only in the 1930s and later in the 1970s that it became commercialized.
Now, you might be wondering why some people use a leash while surfing, while others don't. We can help you understand this.
Like many water sports, when you surf, you are attached to the board. This is done for the same reasons in surfing. When you surf, the force from the waves can sometimes be stronger than when the ocean is calm.
There are many reasons why a leash is used,
but primarily for three advantages:
1. You always have control of the surfboard when you fall off. It doesn't float away.
2. It reduces the risk of injury to yourself or others when the waves shoot the board away. It's an extra safety measure.
3. You are connected to the surfboard, and it always floats, making it easier for you to navigate underwater.
The choice to surf without a leash depends a lot on experience and knowledge. Experienced surfers who can handle the board in a way that doesn't harm anyone may choose to surf without a leash. Additionally, it provides a sense of freedom to surf without a leash, as you don't have to worry about tripping over it while gracefully moving back and forth to maintain speed. Walking on the board requires technique and practice. If you want to

Remember, it's always good to use a leash, even if you're experienced, in crowded areas.
Why do we use the fin?
Now, let's move on to another part of the board - the fin. It's interesting to note that fins were not present on the surfboards used by the Hawaiians. Fins were introduced much later, in the 1930s, and revolutionized the entire surfing experience!
A fin provides stability and helps to provide grip in the wave. There are different systems and models of fins, and the choice of fin always depends on the surfboard and the waves
you're surfing.
The most common models:
# 1: Single Fin
This is often found on long surfboards - the longboards. Here, we recommend our excellent Single Fin Cover, which is included in our made-to-order collection. It protects your fin in an outstanding way.
# 2: Twin Fin
This means there are two fins on each side of the stringer. Check out the parts of the board in our previous post.
# 3: Thruster
Three smaller fins, two on the sides and one in the center. This is common on smaller surfboards designed for competition.
# 4: Quad
Four fins often found on smaller surfboards.
Each system brings its own special characteristic to surfing and the surfboard. We, of course, explore these more in WAHINES Surf Community.
Just like surfboards, fins can come in different sizes. For our Single Fin Cover, you can choose from three sizes. If you want to customize
the cover, please send a message, and we'll
be happy to assist you.

What is the function of a pad?
You have probably noticed a rectangular pad on the back of smaller surfboards. It's called a pad. It's a rubber surface that helps the surfer get better grip with their feet and prevents them from slipping when transitioning from a lying to standing position. The pad also helps you have the right placement on the back
of your foot when surfing.

Thanks to the textured surface, you don't need to use wax on the board, allowing you to surf without losing grip.
